Georgia: the mountains

As you remember,Georgia has different regions. Today we go to the mountains.

If you think you could escape churches, I am sorry but you are mistaken. You get to visit three today because this region was important  ,especially Mtskheta,  which was a capital of Georgia at one time.

Mtskheta is situated where Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers meet.

Java Monastery was built in the 6th Century. It is poised on the top of a cliff so that it has that magnificent view of the rivers.  It is a steep hike to the top but you can do it….lets go.

It is quite small in comparison to some churches we have visited, isn’t it. In the centre is a cross set on top of a stone.  This is where Saint Nino placed a cross so all the city below could see it and acknowledge that it was now a Christian country. You would certainly see it from the top of this hill.

   
The church is under going repairs so  it’s a bit difficult to get the full effect.

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral next.

This is an active monastery. Being built in the 11th Century, it was the burial place of some of the kings.There is a legend that two Georgians were visiting at the time when Christ was  crucified. They bought his robe and brought it home. When their sister touched it she died and was then buried with the robe.

I know you are all churched out. Last one for the day – Ananurin Architectural complex.

It overlooks the Jinvali Reservoir. You will get a fabulous view from the top. Come on! It is just more stairs.

When the  murals were painted, they must have been fabulous for the people.

Are all the churches merging into one. They are all important and beautiful but it is easy to get them confused. Rest now ……another region in the mountains to tomorrow.
