On route to the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi

I am not sure what you think, but this slower pace means you have time to get the feel of a place. What better way than to visit the local farmers market and join the locals buying their produce for the day. Of course things are not displayed like supermarkets at home but you can choose your fruit and vegetables.

New and second hand clothes and shoes, tools….new and second hand of course… then bread, sweets, and meat. I didn’t think we needed to check out the chicken with its little claws standing up in the air or the lumps of beef. In saying that, it is one fresh food market that is clean and didn’t smell. Definitely a plus ! Yes!

Telavi is the administrative centre for the district of  Kizikhi. A notable feature of the town is that huge fortress right in the centre. It is virtually just the outer wall . There is a church and a museum inside.

King Erekle 11 once lived in a palace within the fortress. He is buried along with his son in the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral not far from Tbilisi which we will visit in a few days.

Sighnaghi is a charming fortress town in the Kizikhi district.Its claim to fame is still having the longest city wall intact.

Narrow streets, houses with decorative wooden balconies are the main feature of the town. Georgian’s say its red tiled roofs make it their Italian town or Royal town.

Are you ready for another church? We are heading to the abode Monastery.A Georgian Orthodox Church in the centre of a complex run by an active convent of 30 nuns. As it is a popular tourist attraction, the nuns have employed local men to help with the extensive gardens and agricultural area. I guess it pays for the upkeep of the buildings. It is believed to be the burial place of Saint Nino. She brought Christianity to Georgia. It is also the location of many Kings coronations.

New church still under construction so there are no icons inside.
